Quick Summary of this years Cavalcade

Cavalcade went off as planned (kinda)

Many of us got up Saturday morning walked to the window took one look and said like I did ‘so much for the Cavalcade today, maybe tomorrow will be better’. Then we either called the club’s telephone number or checked the website to verify its postponement only to find that the Cavalcade was a go. John Tambourine’s words were “looks like there’s a big break in the weather”. I walked to the window again scratched my head and figured maybe John’s emailing us from Tucson Arizona. When I arrived at the show to help start setting up at around 7 am the skies were grey but the road was dry. We had a couple of sprinkles throughout the day but nothing significant until 3 pm which forced us to end the show. The Cavalcade was scheduled to end at 4 pm anyway so we only lost an hour. As a matter of fact the cloud cover made for a comfortable day as compared to last weekend when I was concerned about spontaneous combustion while at the Willow Grove Air Show. John saw something in the sky at 5 am Saturday that nobody else did, no not the mother ship coming to get him, I was referring to an area of opportunity to have the show.
Cars trickled in from 7 to 10, some came even later we had about 125 vehicles in the show. We filled up the lower parking lot all the show cars were able to park on asphalt. It even stayed dry enough for people to pull out the towels and clean off the road grime before the judging. The cars were judged and trophies were awarded. I’m sure John will publish the details as to who won what in the July Gas Cap.
The National Guard had a booth as well as Auto Show Photos, Captain Chucky’s Crab cake, Bill Burkholder the King of Zaino, Xtreme Auto Interiors, BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse). We set up the club store and all the registrations tables under the school’s enormous overhang. It was as if the place was built with the Cavalcade in mind.
We had a Pit Competition, where for no charge anyone could try to change a tire using an air gun and compete for a $20 prize that was awarded hourly. The best time was Devon Bole at 37 seconds. This turned out to be a very popular event as a matter of fact when the rains came at 3 pm we had a line of people waiting to give it a shot. This event is a keeper and will be back next year. Surprisingly quite a few small children and young ladies wanted to compete, however the tire was too heavy for them to lift alone so we helped them. Next year we will have a lightweight plywood tire just for them and I will try to get a couple of racing slicks and lightweight Mags for the rest out us.
The slow drag competition was also a lot of fun. For those of you that don’t know what this is let me explain, first off it has nothing to do with men in dresses. You pair your car up just the same as you would at Raceway Park and when you hear “go” you take your foot of the brake and idle to the finish. The slowest car wins. You cannot touch your brake or drop it to neutral to attempt to slow it down. If you have a stick shift you slowly encage the clutch and let the idle drive you. One guy actually opened his door and stuck his foot out in an attempt to slow down. I thought that was pretty clever however next year I will dragging an anchor from the back of my Vette as well a letting 20 lbs of air out of my tires. The trophy will be mine. Ha-ha. A muffler wrap was scheduled for 3 pm but had to be cancelled because of the rain.
Overall it was an excellent show everyone was in good spirits and extremely helpful and were enjoying themselves. I did not hear a sour note from a single person. The spectator turnout was lower than we had hoped for but that was expected due to the weekend’s weather outlook. The rain may have dampened the cars but it did very little to dampen our enthusiasm. Inclement weather is a big part of any motor sport event. I go the Indy 500 every year and have been to a couple of rainouts where 500,000 people just spent $100 per ticket, $500 plane fare, $400 hotel, $150 rental car, $150 at restaurants, 2 day lost vacation to NOT see a race. But car people come back every time! Like I say if rainouts bother you sell your Vette buy a bowling ball, Hell you can bowl during a hurricane if that rings your bell, I’ll stick to wet fiberglass.
If anyone has photos of this years Cavalcade please post them or you can email them to me dpterranova@yahoo.com and I’ll post them for you.
Thanks Don Terranova

Well said....I was one of many who couldn't bring themselves to get their car wet...I salute all of the CCDV warriors who faced the weather and drove their car there....looking at the long range forecast it is going to be a long time till my little Vette gets out of bed.

you should have seen it before I shortened it. If you want I'll read the long version at the next meeting.

Don,

At the next meeting I fully expect you to get up and say "as I was saying, the Cavalcade....."

Despite the weather the Cavalcade was a great time as always. Much of the credit goes to you and John for all your efforts.

Many thanks,
Mark

In my view, one disappointment-all the signs posted along 263 indicated a Sat-Sun event. I'm sure many who drove by felt they would simply visit on Sunday. I can imagine when they showed up???????
Jack, as always, glad to help out with parking.

This is the first i've heard of this. Did we really put up signs promoting a Saturday and Sunday show?

Actually I saw those signs too and figured it was done that way for the rain date coverage. I did talk to 2 spectators who said they were going to "bring their vettes tomorrow" and I told them that there was no show. I imagine it probably did cause some confusion for people we don't know or aren't involved with the club.

I hope we didn't inconveinience too many people. Unfortunately these are the kind of things that can happen when you put something together from the ground up. It's impossible to get it 100% the first time, however you can bet that John will add this to his list of do's and dont's for next year's Cav.
This year basically laid the groundwork for future Cavalcades, if the club members are happy with it and from what I've seen and heard I think they are. We will stick with it and continue to improve it and John T. will weed out any mistakes.

The two day signs were used in prior shows when we had a two day event. As Don said John will re-paint them in the future.

Don, We don't need the long version, remember your time allotment on the agenda is 10 minutes, not 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Folks;
It's all about attracting an AUDIENCE. Since I feel one of our primary Missions is charity, we Must always provide all with the very best opportunity to visit. Just my opinion, but I feel we might have dropped the ball on this one.

I thought the show was great. The cars, the spot and especially all the men and women who worked so hard putting this all together. It takes a lot of dedication and planning to make it work. This is a club that really gets things done.
Hope to see some of you at the Oreland parade on the 4th.
Speed Racer over and out...

Please explain.......If you have some ideas on how to improve next year's Cavalcade we would be glad to hear them and have you help to implement some of them as part of one of the committees in 2007. You can post them here, send me an email, or call me and I'll bring them up to the Cavalcade committee at our next Board meeting where we'll have a debriefing.
I have been part of the Cavalcade for 11 years and except for some minor issues I think all the members who spent many long hours of their personal time did an excellent job. Now if we could only control the weather.......

Plans for this years Cav began many months ago. It was all set to go at the Holicong Park then at the last minute Midway Fire Company pulled the rug out from under us and would not allow us to use their lot opposite the park for spectator parking. So we had to scramble to find a suitable location with only a few short months before ths show;
John T. work tirelessly to
get police permits
get fire permits
get health permits
satisfy all the schools requirements
put the show on
John was still working on the permits up to 2 weeks before the show. Local govt. works at their own pace.
Dropped the ball, I don't think so, I consider it a God Damn miracle that John and his committee pulled it off in such a short time. If we had more time to advertise the show we would have, next year will be a different story.
Should the signs have read Sat and Sunday, of course not, was it an oversight of course it was, they were the signs used at previous 2 day Cavalcade shows will they be used next year of course not.
