1985 Engine Swap

Greetings everyone from Hatboro, PA.

Just purchased this 76000 mile 85 C4 with the Engine and Transmission not installed. I have a 350 engine sitting on a stand ready to install. The 700R4 will be rebuilt completely. I'm looking for suggestions and some tech help thru the build.

Here is my 350 ready to go.

350 2 Bolt Main,
4.00 Bore 3.480 Stroke
Vortec Heads 12558060 64/170
Eagle Crank 103523480 1 Piece 3.480
Crane Cam 270-100132 2500-5800rpm
Speed Pro Pistons - STL-H345NP 4 bore +5.00cc Hypereutectic

1) What manifold would work with my vortec heads and the original TPI?

2) What type of exhaust would you recommend? Chambered, Dual Exhaust, Original with or w/o cat?

3) Solid Motor Mounts or Polyurethane?

4) Will I have to have the computer reprogrammed To recognize the new motor.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU ALL HERE AT THE FORUM could think of??

Funtoy,

I would recommend you look at GM Performance parts for some answers to your questions:

1) Not sure there is a manifold that meets that criteria?

2) Headers, Dual Exhaust with CATS. That way you can pass emissions hopefully.

3) Poly mounts-reduced Vibration

4) Don't know the answer. It may recognize the engine but surely won't run to its potential. So a reprogram is in order.

Maybe the people at Injection Connection can answer some of these questions as they work and modify many late model Vettes plus they are close (On Hatboro Pike near Blair Mill Rd.).

Just some thoughts.

Bob

If its not a daily driver , antique plates eliminate emissions. God are we getting old, antique plates on an '85 Corvette.

Other than inspection no cats will make the exhaust smell and even burn your eyes from the fumes. There are high flow cats that would take care of that problem.

Gentlemen,

Thanks so much for the reply's. I'm looking forward to having car up and running by this summer.

I found the answer to the manifold. Apparently Scoggin Dickey makes a specific manifold for Vortec to TPI setup exclusively.

I would prefer dual exhaust without cats but im not sure if that would fowl up the ecu. Im not that concerned about emissions inspection since it will be registered as a classic or collector car.

Why won't my pictures display in the thread. I've tried a few ways??

Thanks
Funtoy,

I don't think missing cats will screw up the ecu. Thought the O2 sensors were before the cats and egr was later years. If it does, a re-burned chip with a correct tune will take care of that.
As far as pics, I save them to an album in my user CP, then link the pics from the album to the thread.

Funtoy,
Do you have a photo bucket account.(it's free) just copy and paste the IMG code and like magic the pictures will appear.

I don't know the exact laws anymore, but I was surprised to find that my 89 did not require emissions last year with a normal tag. I think they phased out the roller dyno and thus OBD1 cars are now exempt. You are also emissions exempt if you drive less than 5k miles per year. (i think you need to own the car for at least a year to qualify for the 5k mile exemption).

I don't think you will have any issues without cats other than its not great for the environment and will smell like a older car.

@ Bill Burkholder I have a flickr account would that work instead of photobucket? I'd hate to start another photo storage location.

Thanks again everyone. Probably going to go with high flow cats so I don't have the "old car smell" LOL...

It should work, just look for an IMG code then copy and paste. Good move on the cats, a friend was running no cats and his wife made him change his clothes in the garage due to the exhaust smell. She would put them in the wash after he go a shower. I can tell you the smell in his garage when he started it would bring tears to you eyes.
