Mark, I am the same as you. Learned how cars work on my first car. Took that baby apart many times. But always ran and started. Traded the 62 in for a 70 Dodge Dart GTS-340. That car was fast but a POS. Had it 6 mos and got tired of the proiblems and traded it for a 67 Impala SS-another great car. Mine was Red with a White and Black interior. Traded that in on my first new Car- a 1973 pontiac Grand Am W/the first rubber nose. What a boat even with a 400CI engine.

But I wish I had them all back.

Bob the first new car I ever bought was also a 1973 Pontiac. I got the LeMans Sport Coupe GT. It was silver with the louvered windows, factorey mags, wide sport stripe front to back on the side, auto bucket seats. It was such a good looking car people used to compliment me a traffic lights. I miss that car a lot. This photo below is similar, mine was a 73 which slooped more in the back and mine was silver.

1974 International Scout.......wouldn't go straight, rusted in place, couldn't find parts, and always broke when you really needed to be somewhere on time.

Great thread!

1978 Toyota Corona wagon (laughter), with fake wood paneling (howls of laughter). Fully loaded and under powered. Fuel system kept clogging. Even the sidewalls of the Dunlop tires shredded. Oh, what a feeling.

I'd have to say my '86 VW Scirocco 16V. Spent more time in my garage then on the road (literally).

Although, I have to give it some credit as it's the car that I cut my teeth on (mechanically speaking). That car took me from "Changing oil/plugs" to "Rebuilding Motors/Transmissions" in a matter of 2 years.

Don,

That is Neat about your first new car being the same line as Mine.

These are shots I found on line of Grand Ams. Mine didn't have the scoops or Vinyl top (I think you only got the scoops with the 455 CI engine). Mine was a 400 with a 4BBL. And Mine was a brown Metallic color with a saddle interior. It was a boat though.

Covered a lot of ground in that car. <Many good memories.

I loved my 73 too. The color, the louvres side stripe, factory wheels, it was a great car. Not very fast it was right at the beginning of the first phoney fuel crisis. I wanted to buy the GTO but my insurance man talk me out of it really regret that. I ordered it and had to wait 3 months. It was the longest 3 months of my life. But the day it came in was like every Christmas and Birthday combined. I'll never forget it.
By the way the car in ther picture has a GTO hood.

The mid 70's Grand Am was a pretty interesting car. Pontiac capped of the series a few years latter with the Can Am. The Can Am was pretty wild looking for a factory piece. Part Grand Am, part Trans Am.

Don and Mark,

I bought mine off the lot !! Rubber nose, Louvers, Factory wheels, leather interior-mine was loaded. Not fast. It needed every one of the 400CI's to get rolling and got about 8 or 9 MPG. But, still a fun car. I got hit in the rear going to a Flyers game by a kid in a OLDS 98. He slid under the bumper and broke all the headlights, grill and curled the hood. Much damage to him. My Grand Am had a small scratch on the bumper and that is it. Mark I don't remember the Can Am ?? Looks cool though for its time.

I don't think I've owned a bad car yet, they've all servered their purpose in one way or another. But I guess if I had to pick one it would be the 88 Mustang GT when I was 21.

Barrett Jackson had one go over the block this year. It was mint with under 5K on the clock. Makes you wonder what kind of nut saves something like this car for 30 years. Like the Trans Ams of the day they said it was a 6.6L motor but it came with a 403 Olds engine. By 77 that was what GM used with automatic equipped cars. Only 4spd cars got the Pontiac 400ci motor.

If I remember right I think I paid $4600 for my 73. That was loaded also. I think the GTO was about $700 more.
