chrome rims

hello,
i just bought a 2001 triple black vert (32,000 miles) on 4/1 and it has 5 spoke chrome rims and they have some kind of crusty white stuff on them. im not sure how to get it off, i was gonna try vinegar. any sugesstions would help. im also looking for a front bumper license plate filler if anyone knows of someone selling one, i know i can buy and have painted but i'd rather see if i can buy used first.
thanks,
mike

EMTW, Congrats on your Corvette purchase and hope you truly enjoy it. I am not a "Polisher" but I would recommend buying a recognized wheel cleaner that will not harm the chrome wheels and try that first.

There are other people on this forum that can help you more and I am sure they will chime in.

Come On Bill B. Glenn, Carboman and some others !!

Bob

EMTW:

It's probably the clear coat coming off of the wheel itself. There is not much you can do about that except to refinish the wheel. I've used Wheel Collision in Bath, PA several times and they do excellent work and they guarantee their finish. The price is a fraction of the cost of a new wheel. They are open Saturday mornings and will mount and dismount the tires for you.

Clear coat failure on a wheel is common over time.

thanks oy-vette i'll look into that. i kinda thought something drastic would have to be done but if its cheaper then buying new wheels, i'll have them take a look at them.
thanks again

carboman has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I will second the suggestion to contact wheel collision. It's definitely a failure of the clear coat and the chrome getting eaten away. The best solution is to strip/rough up the clear and chrome on the barrels and paint them gloss black. Then they won't show the dirt and will make a great contrast against the chrome wheel face.

Advice given above to have them redone is best.
Good luck and have fun with your new C5

If you decide on going for new wheels I have 2 still in the box 17" x 9.5" 5 spoke chrome wheels. Never been on a car and will to part with these for a good price. These are good for the front only. Send me an email if you are interested.

I Believe that Wheel Collision has an outside vendor that they use to re-chrome the wheel. I think they send it out to California, but not real sure.

im pretty sure the front rim measured 18.5 and the back 19.5 i did it with a tape measure im not sure if theres a more accurate way and im not sure if they measure like a 2x4 which we all know isnt 2x4. if anyone can help out in the measuring department i'd appreciate it. if im wrong on the measurments and wheel collision turns out not to be a good opption i'll get back to you. also looking for painted front bumper license plate filler.
thanks,
mike

Look at the tires, see what size they are. Stock front are 17" rear is 18". If the finish is good on the front of the wheels and only the insides are pitted, you can cet sand the inside with 1000, grit wet dry paper then 2000 then polish and clear coat.

This size of the wheel is simple to figure out. Check the tire sizes marked on the tire's sidewall. Example 295/35 ZR18. The 18 is the wheel diameter.
