Big Red at VIR

We're at Virginia International Raceway for a few days of on track fun and it looks like Big Red has already found a playmate for the next couple days. How about a Night Race Blue C7 with Z51

Looks like my kind of blue! I'd love to see one in person.

Enjoy your time on the track!

Tom

Glenn,

You might want to pull over if you see a C7 coming up in the mirror.......... Looks like it is about 2 seconds quicker then the Z06 at VIR. (hard to believe)

Tom

Chevrolet also revealed what Corvette test driver Jim Mero alluded to at the NCM Bash: This Corvette is seriously fast on the track.

On Virginia International Raceway’s 4.1 mile Grand Course, Mero put down a time of 2:51.78. According to FastestLaps.com, the C6 Corvette Z06 with the Z07 package ran VIR at 2:53.50 in 2011. Mero’s best time ever at VIR was in 2008 in the C6 Corvette ZR1 with a time of 2:45.63.

The lap around VIR was conducted in Stingray equipped with the available Z51 Performance Package and Magnetic Ride Control. The vehicle that conducted the lap was modified only with safety features like a racing seat and harness, and fire extinguisher system.

Tom,

Thanks for posting the info. Sounds like the Corvette design team has done it's homework on the C7. Amazing results.

I could have driven the Nightrace blue one but not on the track, just around the grounds of VIR. I didn't however, just too much else going on. Art Spong did take that one on the track but never over 100mph. GM did not want these cars out there except for a couple laps during lunch break.

My guess? Liability. These are pilot production cars and I'm sure there are reams of paper saying what they can & cannot do with them.

It was good to get a chance to see them in person. Not much point in engaging in a styling debate as it's all personal preference, but while I think seeing it "in the flesh" knocked my opinion meter closer to liking it, I still don't love it. However from the driver's seat I have no doubt I would love its performance!

GM has had plenty C7's out on tracks around the globe. These are Pilot cars and are out there to be driven normally on the streets for evaluation and for the public to see. No need to try to lay down track times with these 3 cars. Liability issues as well I'm sure.
