Hey guys, I changed the oil in my C5 with the recommended Mobil one 5W/30. The owners manual says to put in 6.5 quarts - which I did. However, the dipstick reading is WAY above the recommended level. What did I do wrong, or is this correct for these cars? I did go for a ride and I checked it on a level surface. I also changed the filter. Please help, I would rather not drive it until I hear from one of you. Thanks, Rob

When draining the oil in a C5 the car must be level and allowed to drain for 15-30 minutes, the wings hold oil and it take a while to get all the oil out. All of my C5's would hold 7 quarts and that would take it right to the top of the line on thye dip stick. It is safe to drive around with a "little" extra oil, if you're too far above the fill line I would drain some out

hcvone, thanks. The car wasn't level when it drained and I didn't let it drain for 15 to 30 minutes. I thought I may have the wrong dipstick since I bought it from a used car dealer. However, your theory makes sense - I'll drian some out to be safe. Thanks, Rob

Rob, level is very important on the C5's when changing the oil. :)

hcvone, thanks for your suggestions. I obviously didn't let it fully drain and the car wasn't level. I am going to drain some out before I drive it again. Next time, I will do it just as you say. Thanks, Rob

Not to be a picky, but doesn't this thread belong in the C5 Tech Talk forum?

Can a Moderator move it?

if you did not buy the car new from dealer, then engine work
may have been done and the correct position of dipstick
assembly was not accomplished during reassembly.
who changed oil in past ?
but if stick shows below and 6.5 quarts are in then you should be ok if oil pressure reading is good.
tip: measure visible part of dipstick tube to engine insertion point.
compare your measurement with another c5.

hope it helps.

Yea, next time do exactly as hcvone says...

How dare you not have your car level & not allow a 30 minute drain time! ;nn
