Didn't get better till much later. In a new book, "The Limit:Life & Death on the 1961 Grand
Prix Circuit ", Michael Cannell gives a fascinating picture of racing in the 50's & 60's.
Between 1957 & 1961, the chance of survival for drivers was 1 in 3.Although the book is centered on Phil Hill & Wolfgang von Tripps ( both team Ferrari drivers ) , there is still lots of coverage of other famous racers of the era. The descriptions of the endurance races through Mexico & the Mille Miglia are unbelievable. This period is still one in which there are no seat belts, roll bars ,fire suits, etc.Ironically, in 1961 when Phil Hill becomes the 1st American to win the Grand Prix championship, the victory is virtually ignored because of the death of Count von Trips in one of the earlier races.
