Cruise with us to Niagara Falls Canada

http://budgethostnf.com/images/niagara-falls-attractions.jpg

If you’ve been thinking about going on a CCDV trip but have been waiting for the right one, your wait is over. On October 2nd we’ll be driving to Niagara Falls Canada. It’s a 7-hour drive plus stops. We’ll drive up on Saturday and arrive at dinnertime. Sunday will be spent sightseeing the Falls and in the afternoon take an optional side trip to Old Fort Niagara. Monday we go on an optional Winery private bus tour (see details below), then we'll leave for home Tuesday morning. We’ll stay at the EMBASSY SUITES www.embassysuitesniagara.com (http://www.embassysuitesniagara.com/) in Niagara Falls, Canada; it is a five star hotel and 100 yards from the brink of the falls. Every room will have a view of the falls. The rooms are spacious with 2 queen size beds, separate living room with a sofa bed a well-lit dining area, two color TVs, wet bar, mini bar, microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator. The price of the hotel includes a complimentary full breakfast each morning as well as a Manager’s reception, which includes complimentary drinks and appetizers each evening. There is a $10 charge for parking per day, it is normally $20 but they gave use a discount. If you worry about your car’s safety, don’t. They have full time security and have offered to cordon off an area solely for our Corvettes. There is a fine restaurant in the hotel called ‘The Keg Steakhouse & Bar’. I hear the food is terrific and it has a view of the falls.

Old Fort Niagara

Sunday

Sunday we'll take a self guided tour of the falls, then in the afternoon an optional trip to Fort Niagara www.oldfortniagara.org (http://www.oldfortniagara.org/) which is on the banks of Lake Ontario, about a 20 minute drive north of the falls in New York. Built by the French in 1726 later controlled by the British then United States, the fort has a long and interesting history. It is well preserved and they offer tours all day long with people in period uniforms demonstrating firearms and what it was like living at the fort in the 1700s. This may not interest everyone so it is optional. If you prefer to stay at the falls, there is plenty to do there. There are casinos, gift shops, museums or you can find a café overlooking the falls, have a few drinks and take it all in.

Monday

We'll take a optional private guided bus tour to visit a few wineries. This will allow us to sample as much wine as we like without worrying about driving. This region is known for their wine and for an unusual wine called ‘Ice wine’. The tour will take about 5 hours and it includes a stop in the town called ‘Niagara on the Lake’ which has been described as the prettiest town in Canada and a stop at a chocolate factory.

'Niagara on the Lake' (http://www.niagaraonthelake.com/)

You will need a passport to gain entry into Canada. An option is a U.S. Passport Card this will allow you to drive into Canada. It is cheaper than a Passport. CLICK FOR INFO (http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html)

Cost, be aware these prices are Canadian dollars (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/north-america/canada/currency-converter.htm) which is almost 1to 1 but it does fluctuate.
$525 (CDN) plus 13% tax total for the room Sat, Sun & Mon
$30 (CDN) parking fee
$65 (CDN) plus tips per person for the winery bus tour
$10 (US) per person admission to Old Fort Niagara

Misc. There are tolls for the PA Turnpike, New York Thruway and a couple bridge tolls. We will be stopping for lunch and dinner while traveling at places such as Chili’s, Fridays etc… Once at the falls we can either dine together or go off on your own, your choice. You’ll have plenty of places to choose from Wolfgang Pucks to McDonalds.
We would hope that you will drive your Corvette but we do not require it.
The rooms are spacious with a pullout sofa bed, maybe your adult children want to tag along, make it a family trip.
There are tours of the falls available. They range in price from $15 to $25, which you may sign up for while there. I find that simply standing next to the falls by the railing, which is free is just as spectacular.

*How to book the Winery tour*
If you plan to go on the Winery, Niagara on the Lake and chocolate factory tour mail Don Terranova a check or give Don a check $78 per person at one of our many upcoming events or mail it to the address below. This price includes all taxes and tips. The cutoff date for this is also Sept 2nd. Make the check payable to me Don Terranova. Stop laughing, I know what your thinking and I’m not going run off with it all, probably, ha-ha. The lady that runs the tours for Embassy Suites, Caryn Peters informed me that they want one single payment beforehand and do not accept checks so hello Don’s VISA. The price may actually go down a bit according to the number of folks that sign up, if it does I’ll refund the difference. My mailing address is :
Don Terranova
165 Equestrian Drive
New Hope, PA 18938

Don & Chris:
2 questions;
1. Do you have a rough idea of the round trip miles for the weekend?
2. Is this solely a CCDV members only event? We have friends that would like to join us but they're not Club members.
Thanks,
Joel & Sue

Joel it's about 400 miles each way. There is no issue with having friends or relatives attending. The hotel has plenty of rooms. The only question might be allowing or not allowing non club members to be part of the free room raffle. That is of course if we have booked enough rooms to qualify, 25 required. We have plenty of time to iron this out, as matter of fact I'm planning on having a meeting of all those going on the trip down the road sometime. We can discuss the raffle rules then.

A few useful notes for the trip

1) The Starting Point for the Group to Niagara Falls will be at the Allentown Service Plaza (http://www.paturnpike.com/geninfo/srvcplaza/allentown.aspx) on the PA Turnpike's Northeast Extension.
This Service Plaza is located at milepost 55.9. It is north of both the Lansdale Interchange #31 and the Quakertown Interchange #44. GPS cooridinates are: 40.5750, -75.5580 (DMS N40 34 30, W75 33 28)

2) Plan to be at the Starting Point no later than 9:00am on October 2nd. Once we're all gathered we'll pull out at 9:15 sharp in two groups. I will lead the first group in a RED C6, Bob Bearns will lead the second group also in a Red C6.

3) It will be approx 180 miles from Allentown until we plan to stop for fuel. Plan accordingly.

4) The Rainbow Bridge into Canada does NOT accept EZpass. Cash toll is $3.25 and you can pay with US funds.

5) If anyone has ANY questions or suggestions about the trip, please either reply here with your question, send me a private message with your phone# and I'll call you ASAP or I can give you my cell number.

Greg Baugher showed me his GM Navigation System in his 2005 Corvette and it is NOT capable of entering Signed Degree Format Longitude & Latitude coordinates as I have posted earlier. If you own a Garmin or Tom-Tom you should be able to use the coordinates given... For those with GM Navigation units I have converted all Longitude & Latitude coordinates from Signed Degree Format to DMS Format (Degree, Minutes, Seconds) which should work in your GM Nav units.

SO, below are are some helpful cooridinates for those with GM Nav units for the trip. If you refer to the Directions Handout that I gave everyone at the September 9 meeting, you can compare these cooridinates to those directions.

The above numbers are formatted as: h ddd mm ss.s

SO, to enter the Starting Point of trip - Allentown Service Plaza: N40 34 30, W75 33 28

It would be entered as:
N 40 34 30.0
W 075 33 28.0

There are 3 different ways of inputting Long & Lat coordinates into different GPS units

I can use all 3 in my Garmin and it appeared your GM Nav only allowed one. Check to be sure which it is....

Yours was either h ddd mm.mmm or h ddd mm ss.s

The coordinates I gave in the post just today are in the h ddd mm ss.s format.

The 3rd format is h ddd mm.mmm shown below..

Looks like I won't be driving my Vette to the Falls unless it somehow heals itself. I have a mysterious oil leak that is somehow finding it's way to the exhaust manifold, I replaced the gasket yesterday, couldn't believe that didn't fix it. It also has an uncanny ability to make coolant disappear. So it looks as if a BMW will be bringing up the rear. Don

There are apps for iPhone, Droid, and I think Blackberry phones to display these routes -- I know iPhone has both; I've heard Droid works best with the OruxMaps app which links to Everytrail. If you have a GPS capable of utilizing GPX, CRS, or similar GPS files you can download the routes into the GPS too. If nothing else, you can view & print the maps from your computer using these links.

Looking forward to it!

The Plan
Trip itinerary is totally up to the individual we not offer an itinerary that is left to the professionals. I do however have some recommendations that may make your time here a little more enjoyable and efficient.

Once we arrive at the hotel the first order of business is to get into our rooms, kick back for a bit and unwind. Then before you know it, its dinnertime. I checked into the possibility of making a reservation for all of us at the KEG restaurant at the Embassy Suites and was told that Saturday evening is the busiest night for them and they cannot seat us. They do take walk-ins but you might experience a long wait. Niagara Falls has a massive amount of restaurants; my suggestion is to grab a bite to eat at a restaurant in the area. And check out the Falls at night; remember it’s a short walk. They illuminate the falls at night with colored lights; make a point to see it. There is an Outback next door and a Tony Romas across the street for instance.
I was able to have the hotel set aside a private dining area for us at the Keg for the complimentary buffet breakfast. Remember this is merely a suggestion if you wish to make alternate plans please feel free. Times are as follows:
9am Sunday & Monday
8am Tuesday
After breakfast on Sunday would be a good time to tour the Falls. There are many tour packages to choose from which include guided tours, a trip to the top of the Skylon Tower for a bird’s eye view or a soggy ride on the Maid of the Mist. You might wish to check out the Falls without a tour guide too, it’s a spectacular site to see anyway you do it. There will be plenty of information on tours in the lobby of the hotel. If you plan to visit Old Fort Niagara later in the day you may want to make sure the tour you chose will work for you.
After Sunday lunch, we will be heading over to Old Fort Niagara it’s about 30 minutes 17 mile away in New York. It should not take more than 3 hours to visit the Fort. We should be back in our cars and heading back into Canada by 4:30 and at the hotel by 5/5:15.
Please meet in the lobby of the hotel at 12:45 if you plan to visit Old Fort Niagara.
Dinnertime we will be on our own or you will have a good idea by then of just how many restaurants with great views there are and may want to have dinner at one. Don’t forget about the hotel’s Manager’s Reception each evening I don’t know the times but I’m sure they’ll let us know.
Monday after breakfast we will board the bus for a tour of the wineries, the chocolate factory and Niagara on the Lake. The bus is scheduled to depart 10am. The plan is to be in the town of Niagara on the Lake at lunchtime. Once there we will have time to shop and eat. After we return from the tour, around 3pm, we will once again find ourselves on our own. This will be a good time to do what you did not have time to do on Sunday, perhaps take a ride on the Maid or the Mist or whatever else. If you have not already signed up for the trip you still have time. See me.
Monday night I plan to find a restaurant that has a view of the Falls, get a comfortable seat, order some food and stay there for a couple of hours (or more) and help Canada dispose of some adult beverages. Hopefully it will be warm enough to sit outside but I’m not counting on it.
Tuesday morning we have the private dining area for breakfast reserved at 8am. Directly after breakfast we will begin our trek home.

http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=829522

There are apps for iPhone, Droid, and I think Blackberry phones to display these routes -- I know iPhone has both; I've heard Droid works best with the OruxMaps app which links to Everytrail. If you have a GPS capable of utilizing GPX, CRS, or similar GPS files you can download the routes into the GPS too. If nothing else, you can view & print the maps from your computer using these links.

Looking forward to it!
That's cool Paul. Thanks!

Pack some warm things to wear, I know at my house in upstate NY this weekends high temps are in the 40's and lows in the upper 20's, it will be warmer in western NY, but even the Pocono's are getting into the upper 30's this weekend. Have fun, great sites for sure, by safe. :)

There was a bunch of garbage in the original maps I uploaded, that's been cleaned up now. Disregard the old links, use these instead. Sorry for any inconvenience, it was getting late last night when I threw that together.

That's cool stuff.
Looks like you know how to use Long & Lat coordinates. Check this one out. I am hoping along the way to pull the group into this cool scenic overlook along route 6 near Wyalusing, PA. I'll have to see how it looks as we approach it. It will need to be basically empty (no other vehicles) to get our 25 cars into it.
