This not the rah-rah post you were probably expecting to see today about the Phillies.
SO............ Someone explain to me why butthead Charlie Manuel would bring Brad Lidge into last nights game with 2 outs in the 9th with a 7 run lead?????
That guy (Lidge) does not deserve to be the guy on the mound in a clinching game to throw the final out. Scott Eyre got the first two batters out in the 9th, then Charlie takes Scott out and let's Lidge finish the game.. WTH
1) Lidge has proven to be the worst pitcher on the staff with a Major League leading 11 blown saves in 2009
2) Charlie has continually watched Lidge throw games away and just leaves him in the game to do so. With a bullpen full of pitchers ready to go, he would just watch Lidge blow saves all season long.
3) Scott eyre did exactly what he should have done in the 9th last night, GET PLAYERS OUT.
4) Lidge pitches just the final out... Shows he has no faith in the guy to pitch the entire 9th inning, even with a 7 run lead????
5) Charlie would never take Lidge out when he was blowing games, why take Eyre out when he's doing exactly what he's paid to do??
I persoanlly think that was wrong... thoughts?

The Atlanta game ended in a loss a minute before Lidge started so they were in anyway. I think Charlie just wanted to build him up a bit. While Lidge sure did suck down the stretch he still had over 30 saves this year.
The really sad news is Moyer getting injured and being out for the payoffs and I'd guess his career may be over :(

If you want to build confidence in Lidge, give him the entire inning.
Giving him the final out ONLY tells me that he was still didn't have the confidence in the guy, even with a 7 run lead.....
Big confidence builder, they throw a guy in with a 7 run lead to get one out. He could have faced 9 batters and still won.

Maybe Charlie wasn't THAT confident in him :)
I didn't like that move myself although the popular opinion today seems to be that Charlie Manual did a classy move. I don't really care if it was classy. I didn't think it was appropriate. I think the guy has frustrated lots of people this season with blown games and I didn't need him out there even if he did pitch the winning out of the World Series last year.
Plus, the time lost in doing the pitching change and having him warm up dragged the game out longer and the Braves/Marlins game ended up finishing first just by a few minutes. I know it didn't matter either way statistically but if I was on the team, I'd want to win the division under my own team's game.

The batter Lidge faced was his ex roommate years ago.
He threw it down the middle and did you notice the soft swing the batter had. The last out was a gift from the batter.

Well, all season Lidge has come in and just tossed away sure wins for the team while Charlie just sits there and watches. Latest one, last Wednesday, Miami, Florida, Lidge comes in for the bottom of the 9th with a 1 run lead, first batter doubles, next batter LOOOOng fly to advance that batter to third, next batter walks. Charlie, sleeping in the dugout. Next batter grounds out. Next two batter each get base hits and the Marlins win. Happened way too many times this season.
To me, with runners at 1st and 3rd, 1 out, that's time to birng someone else in.... BUT he stays with Lidge as he does all seaon to get him his record 11th blown save...
Last night, reliever comes in for the 9th, gets the first two batters out, Charlie yanks him for Lidge..
There is something wrong with that picture....

Glenn - There's about 10 more times this year that almost duplicate what you said.

Glenn, don't go crazy now, but, when you have to manage a bunch of different personalities, and you want to get them to operate as a team sometimes you have to coddle someone and sometimes you have to kick them in the ass. The trick to doing this correctly is what is know as being a good manager. Charlie Manual is doing the right thing...because he might have to call on Lidge in the playoffs and need him to perform. It's calld "Mamgment 101". They'll be all right!

Please............
My biggest fear is that he WILL call on him... We don't need the Lidge that played in 2009. He's a head case... We have good pitchers, he's NOT one of them...
Lidge is one of those that needs the "Kick in the ass" as you say.....
I'm not going crazy, as big of a fan as I am, I really don't care if they win or lose the World Series in 2009.
Oh and for "Management 101" I manage 95 different personalities 5 days a week..... I'm pretty well versed but thanks anyway for the lesson...

Glenn, my point is "don't worry it's not in our hands anyway !" I know, if anything is true, that whatever happens the whole series will be a nail biter. ;yn Can you ever expect less from a Philly sports team.....;at no wonder we have grey hair.:o
