View Full Version : Nicks Auto Show Review
Well I went to the Auto show last night and this is how it went for me:
Over all I seem to think that in general, the stickers were high, the mileages were not great and the Camera was in fact disappointing. 30K for a Chevy Impala, things seem to be out of touch for an industry that is collapsing.
I wasn’t there as much as a spectator, but as a buyer. I have 3 cars that I have to replace this year, as the leases will be running out in a few months.
I have decided to replace a Lincoln SUV with a Audi A6, a Saturn Aura with a BMW 550I. And a Honda Civic with a new Honda Civic. There was nothing in the big 3 that worked for me.
This will be the first time in many years that I will not have 1 of the big 3 in my name, other than the CORVETTE.
As for the Corvette, great car for a great price? 67K for a convertible, little high for me. The Z06 and the ZR1 are a great value.
The Viper, (79K) With a 1mm bore increase over the previous generation engine, the new 8.4L (510 cubic inch) A356 T6 aluminum block 90 degree V10 motor now achieves 600 HP at 6000 rpm and 560 lb-ft of torque at 5100 rpm.. The Viper was for me, real nice. I always had a thing for the Viper. One reason being, you buy a Viper and you get a Viper, no other models, they all come with the same stuff.
The Mustang never disappoints me. I love Mustangs, always have. They are fun cars and very affordable. They sound great right out of the box, unlike Corvette owners who have to spend 2K to get the car to sound right, the Mustang has a great sound for me. The Mustang is always a great car to get next to on the road. I feel, without a car like the Mustang, we would loose a lot of the young people getting into the sport. The price is right for the younger people who can’t afford Corvette’s and other high-end speeders.
My favorite car of the night was the Challenger. Great car for me, priced right, fast, good looking car that brings me back to the old muscle car days.
Over all, I love the car show, I feel good being around all the cars and everyone else that loves and appreciates cars.
Takes care and look forward to seeing you all in the spring. It will be here before you know it!

Nice writeup Nick. Question....BMW 550 replacing a Saturn???
Anyway, Your comments about the Mustang make sense to me. I am not sure I like the 2010 mustang. The rear has lost the mustang look.
I look for your next writeup at the AC show.;aw
Yeh Todd. I desided to move up a couple of notches. I'm hoping I can get a good deal on a short lease on the BMW?

Under the present economic conditions, couldn't you sacrifice a little a buy THREE AMERICAN CARS instead of imports. The job you save may be yours, or your neighbor's.

Frank, Any true american would have agree with your point but I got to tell you it's hard spend with the big three. How dare their actions going to congress totally unprepared in a corporate jet. These are the thing that
got em in trouble to begin with. They seem more interested in blaming the unions(not defending the unions) and other thing instead of competing with the imports. Some of those imports support the american worker
right here on our soil. So, I see Nicks point of replaceing a Honda with a Honda. He is still supporting the american worker and getting a good value
at the same time. It's time the big three get their head out of a**s quit begging and get to work. That would create buyers and keep our workers
busy. Just my opinion and I hope to change my mind in the future.
But until then:(:(:(

What's with the camera. Were you at the Auto Show or the Photographers expo in the lower hall of the center?
PS I think I'll replace my Honda in a month or so with a Mustang.

Todd,
I read somewhere on a Mustang forum that Ford has several "special" editions planned for the new 2010 model including a Boss 302 and even a Cobrajet version. I guess Ford figured they'd have competition from the Camaro.

I have been a Mustang lover for a long time. Especially 69-70s
I would love to see the Boss, Machs and Cobra jets return.
I owned a 03 cobra 390hp The car was fast and fun.
What do you think would be a replaca of the Cobra Jet engine?

Todd my guess is the Cobrajet would get some version of a supercharged engine. What's interesting is the current GT 500 has basically the same engine that was in the Ford GT. Having the distinct pleasure of driving a GT I have to say that's one STRONG engine. The only problem with the GT 500 Mustang is it's way too heavy and frankly overpriced.

I like the Mustangs and have a special place in my heart for them because back in the day I had a 1967 Mustang with a 390 in it. I needed to sell it in 1971 when we got married to pay the rent.
I was at the Phila Car Show today because I am buying a new car in March or April. I held off for a year and a half because of the economy. Looking at the cars IMO, GM, Ford and Dodge have it all over the imports. I decided I am going to get a CTS. My wife and I am in a debate if it is going to be a CTS or a CTS-V.

I need to get it in my head that the cars from yesteryear are gone.
But it is nice to see them remembered;aw
WTF, I am lucky enough to have a kick ass Corvette!

Personally I'm one of the few that liked the Camaro. I also liked the new 'stangs & challengers a lot too. I would buy anyone of those if I were in the market long before a Toyota, Hundai or Nissan. As for me, as nice as the CTS-V is, I'd go for the Pontiac G8 GXP. It's quick & is a heck of a lot cheaper.
Frank;
I understand completly, however I am done with the big 3 for now. I stood by them for years and my heart goes out to the american worker. But they got to get their act together.
When they start doing it right, and can compete with the rest of them, then I will come back. But until then, I will do what I have to do. Those fat cats don't give a rats ass about me and the only way that I can get my message out is not to buy their product.

Well said Nick.
Besides, the government made it perfectly clear they alone can fix the failing American auto industry. They didn't request our help, they didn't ask our permission to use tax dollars as a bailout or bridge loan, they didn't ask for any concessions other than beggars shouldn't show up in private jets, they didn't even ask that we buy American during this crisis. Seemingly, neither the government nor the American auto industry has any clue what it takes to sell cars. All they know how to do is throw (other peoples) money at a problem and hope it goes away.
Since they got into bed with the government, let the government buy their cars. Asking people to throw down $20K-$60 on a new car that may or not come with a full warranty or have parts available in the coming years is asking a lot from people they've been charging too much in the past.
Furthermore, if you really want to help your neighbor, you should buy a used car from a local dealer or private owner. 100% of the funds go right back into your local economy. And you can still feel good buying that used import because it's all 100% local stimulus, right down to the shop that'll work on it. Not one cent goes overseas (until you need a part) and you get a quality car. The state even makes out because it gets to collect sales tax on an item they've previously collected on.
Every car I've bought over the years has been pre-owned, with the exception of my current Corvette. How many local kids got another semester of college from my purchases? Just because people own foreign cars doesn't mean they don't support Americans. Buying a new car is not the kind of stimulus this country needs right now. The auto industry should be forced into restructuring not rewarded for poor management.
Nick, thanks for your take on the show. I didn't make it down there for various reasons. I wanted to go, I even had free tickets, but I don't think I missed anything. I'm keeping my eyes open for another awesome late model used car to replace the Jag, which has been great over the past few years. It's an 05 with 40K that runs great so I'm in no hurry.
Well written C5pilot. I just might look into a used car and save some $ to boot.
