When I got my car painted a couple of years ago I got all of my chrome back in boxes. I'm still putting it back together. My question relates to the grill. Is a gasket necessary between the oval and the car? The research I've done doesn't show any gaskets, but everything else does, so I thought I'd ask the experts before bolting it back in. I'm also going to have a problem with reinstalling the door posts, windows and door handles, so any advice would be welcome!
Thanks,
Dennis

Mine is a 1957, Aztec Copper. 283, 3 speed. I've owned it since 1966.

Dennis, any chance you graduated from UM in 64? I knew a guy with your name back then that had an early Vette.

Hi Tony,
That's me - class of '64. As I recall, you and I shared a few classes in UM. What have you been up to?
I still have the same Vette I bought in '66. It was out of commission for quite a few years, but I had the carb rebuilt and some other minor stuff done and now it runs like a champ. I'm eager to get it back on the road again. It looks like it will be back on the road long before I get all of the chrome on,
I see you have a '96 - nice car!

That is so cool that you still have that car. I always liked the 56-57. Vettes and the color looked really good. I'll ask a guy that I race with, he has a 57, about the gasket. I'll see him on Aug. 2nd. There are a few guys in the CCDV that have 57's . I'll try to get an answer for you.
After HS it was:
Army '66-'68 Viet Nam '67-'68
Three great kids. 2 girls and a boy. 2 grandsons. 2 ex-wives. I live right down the road in Jamison with my longtime friend and sweetheart Rose. I don't know if you remember my Red '59 Vette but I wrecked that before the Army. I got a '65 coupe after the Army, got rid of that for a family car. After my first divorce I bought a '66 convert. Only kept that one a few months. Went Vette-less for years then in '98 bought my '96. I currently have that one and an '06. The '06 is my daily driver. My cell number is 267-246-9256.
Glad to see you still have the Vette!

Tony,
Thanks for offering to ask a couple of guys in the club about my grill issue. I need all the help I can get.
Here's the lowdown on my post-UM experience:
After UM I went to Villanova. Went directly into the Navy after graduating. Two Viet Nam tours, one on a small cargo ship in the Delta, one as a Naval Advisor in Cam Ranh Bay. I'm sure neither of my in-country tours was as eventful as yours. Got married a couple of years after getting out of the Navy to Penny Geary, younger sister of the legendary Corky Geary. We have two girls, 28 and 26, and a boy, 22.
While I was in the Navy, my Vette was parked behind my Dad's house. I put a 3.08 rear in it intending to drive it to Long Beach CA, but chickened out. Probably a good thing. The 3.08 rear is still in it, but the original 4.11 is in the back of my garage.

Great class of 64! Lots of cute girls. Denise Marshall, Jane Linker, Pat Timperio, good old Ginny Althouse and my ex's sister Carole Lyle! What a great time and place to grow up. :D

Dennis,
I don't believe there is anything between the grill and body BUT a member is checking with a local Restoration shop with many years experience in '57s. He is on vacation right now but we hope to have an answer for you soon.

I am reinstalling the chrome on my 62 right now. The later C1 grills do not have any gaskets. The grill's outer trim mounts to the body and the grill insert section mounts on the inside of the opening on the studs fron the top and bottom trim pieces.
Good luck on getting your trim back on, the car will look great.

There are no gaskets of any kind on the grill surround on a 57. I spoke with Dick Robinson Saturday night at Hatboro and he confirmed no gasket of any type.
