View Full Version : Small Changes

WebGuy

I've made some small changes to help search engine ranking.

The main change you'll notice is that I got rid of the splash page. that's that black page with the club logo & animated Vette that you'd hit when you entered www.ccdv.com . You now go directly to the homepage. This will help the search engine spiders to dip deeper into the site.

next up is putting the list of newest threads back into the homepage. it was removed previously to clean things up but it's really necessary for better search results.

if I wind up breaking something while making these changes, please let me know. though it's just the homepage, it uses templates that are used on every page on the site. (like the header, navigation, footer, etc) the changes I'm making there could theoretically cause an error on any page of the site.

I received some new Cavalcade flyers. they'll be up shortly.

Finally, I'm also working on a special 50th anniversary page which Dennis Levitt has put together. Not sure when that will be completed. Still alot of coding to do to get it the way he wants it.

I still need to update the Cavalcade page. Not doing that until after I'm done with the homepage & the 50th anniversary page but the flyers are up.

for those interested, I also removed the splash page from the CECF www.corvetteraffle.org website for the same reason.

this is by no means finished. it's just where i left off working.

when i'm done it will match the site's color scheme and be wrapped around a page similar to this one with our header & navigation links

I'm still testing this page so I haven't added links to the menu yet but here's an active topics page. It lists all the threads from all the forums. It lets you sort them several ways making it very easy to find everything that's new. It's a script I've written from scratch.

you'll notice that their is an option to list just the threads you've started. it makes it very easy to jump into previous conversations without doing a search. I will eventually add an option to list just the threads you've replied to.

Since I needed this code to update the homepage, I figured I might as well put up the full script. the homepage will soon have the newest 25 threads listed on it. this will help get google spidering into the site

I need to check permissions yet and be sure it's not showing private forums to people who shouldn't be able to see them.

WebGuy

ok, I fixed the permissions.

staff can see all forums

club members can see everything except the staff forums

regular members can see all the non staff or club forums

guests can't use the page at all.

ok, I added the "threads i replied to" link. it's not been heavily tested but it appears to work & all the links / sorting options are straightened out. I'll play with it more after hours.

a thread should only appear once in the active topics list except when using "threads I replied to" and the extra sort option of post date. then every one of your posts in every thread is there. not sure if that's needed or not yet but basically it's listing all of your posts in the order of newest to oldest.

it currently doesn't list more than 30 pages. that should be more than enough

I'd rather lose the "Quick Links" button. All the features under that can be found with one click on "User CP". You cannot do a "New Posts" search any other way, we need it back.

Besides, I don't see the benefit of having an Active Topics button when every thread shows the number of views and replies already. If the site was busier perhaps it would be of use. But the "Active Topics" display is in a different format than all the other forum screens making it difficult to tell at a glance what's new since your last visit, IMO. It'll take some getting use to but I'm wondering why? I'd be glad to hear other opinions.

I agree with C5 Pilot, the "new posts" link should remain!!!

I'm normally not one for negative commentary, but I believe that deleting the New Posts link is a mistake. Please reconsider your decision. Thanks

You cannot do a "New Posts" search any other way, we need it back. You cannot do a "New Posts" search any other way, we need it back.

active topics is the new posts link with more features. did you guys click it? it lists all the newest posts without having to wait for the search.

if you'd rather wait for the search i'd be happy to go backwards.

here click both links. it shows the IDENTICAL RESULTS
http://www.ccdv.com/forums/search.php?do=getnew
http://www.ccdv.com/forums/activetopics.php?

the difference is active topics is instant while new posts there's a delay. though sometimes it's instant it's becasue the search is cached, it has to redo the search and re-cache it on a regular basis.

active topics lets you sort the results.
active topics lets you limit the results to new posts by a specific person.
lets you limit it to new threads instead of new posts
it's really got alot.

it's like new posts +

Incorrect. New Posts allowed us to simply click the red arrow to "Go to first new post" IMMEDIATELY. No scrolling to find where we left off.

The Active Topic button lists all recent threads but no button to "go to first new post", so you have to scroll to find where to begin reading. THAT is time lost, not saved. If you don't believe me, see if you can find new posts since your last visit faster than the search could have been done for you. Like I said befrore, the Quick Links is redundant and takes the same amount of clicks to access it from the CP, get rid of that if you need more room in the task bar.

It may make sense on a busy website where you don't have time to read every single thread and only want to see what all the buzz is about. Our site is small enough to read every thread as long as you don't have to start over each time.

..."and that's all I have to say about that." :)

Have you found anything that's been changed recently that is keeping some people from remaining logged on? Thanks.

VetteChick

Call me old fashioned, but old way was easier to read and use. I don't think anybody who expressed an interest in having "New Posts" restored wanted that name with the "active topic" format. At least I didn't - I think the active topic screen is crowded and hard to use.

Doug Bereczki
05-30-08, 12:46 AM
I liked the old new posts. It always took me to the first unread post in a thread.

Now it takes me to the last post in a thread. And I have to scroll up to the last post I read in a thread. Very cumbersome. I don't care for the new active thread system at all.

jacques
05-30-08, 12:41 PM
I have to agree with C5Pilot. More "people" time is wasted doing a manual search through the listings under the new scheme that the "computer" time necessary to provide the search results under the old scheme.

Please revert to the old scheme. Thanks

Yes, but it reads terrible..
Can we go back to the way it was before?

Every site I have seen with this software version DOES NOT have the New posts reading this way, (like a list)..

Its hard to read, I don't care for it.
