A cold track and cold tires makes for scary racing.

Good time at the track in spite of the cold ;at;at. Street tire guys had a rough time in the first few runs but the track did improve. Joel, Richy, Doug, Jerry, Mike, Ellis and me were running and Ken L was taking movies of the action. Doug went the furthest going into the quarter finals. The Vettes came out on top of the Street tire and Drag radial Class. The quickest car event was taken by a 67 GTO. He red lighted against Doug in the Bracket racing.

That was the only mishap/close call today unless there was something else after I left. BUT I bet the Z06 owner as well as the GTO owner pooped their pants!!
Mark: Was that video by Ken? and the background noise is the wind that was brutal most of the day.

Wow! They didn't waste any time putting that up on the internet! ;ae

The guy in that Z06 was running with street tires. His previous runs he hooked ok and had consistent times. That run he appeared to "lose it" and didn't get out of the throttle!

Now I know I made the right call this morning and stayed in bed. I don't have much seat time since I tuned out most of the torque management this winter. Competing against cars with street tires when it's cold REALLY scares me. Glad the day worked out in the end. Congrats on a good day Doug!

Hi guys,

I have a quite a few good videos of everyone including one of the yellow Z06crossing over to the right lane. The videos are on an hour long DVD that I will bring to the club meeting on Thursday. I also hope to make copies to share. Fortunately, with the microphone I was using, there is little if any wind noise, just the nice roar of good old V-8's.

If someone can remember to bring a portable DVD player we will be able to see the action. Does anyone know if the VE Club has a TV and DVD player we can borrow for the meeting? It would be nice to see the videos on a large screen before the meeting starts. Perhaps someone can call and look into this.

It was a lot of fun being with everyone and seeing the cars run. As I was taking pictures from the starting line, I could see the Vette's could "hook up" a lot better at the starting line the GTO's.

I especially liked seeing drag racing done "the old fashion way". Many of the GTO's were 6 speeds like mine. Hearing the GTO's getting third gear rubber was great!

See you on Thursday at the meeting.

Ken

Actually both drivers did a great job in NOT hitting each other and the wall as well. I watched the whole thing coming up on the return lane. If you watch the video you can see my car as those guy flashed by. :rolleyes:The problem Joe wasn't the street tires. It was the very cold plus the virgin (can I say this on the forum?) track and the problem at Atco that forces eveyone to go thru the water. It was a bit greasy but as the day warmed up & more cars ran it got better. My first run I went sideways but by my last run I hooked & promptly broke out by .02 sec. Joe, it was really cold.

I separated the video into three clips, but they are still not small. It is probably best that you right click and save them to your machine to view so they are not interrupted in download.

They are raw and it was my first time out with the camera this year so I may be a little rusty. Footage is unedited. I have full wide screen versions if there is a clip of your car you want.

I raced first round and lost with a .001 red light so I have video from Rd 2 on.

For Round 2 video, both classes 35 MB Video of Round 2 (http://www.challengevideos.com/2008/GTOvVettes/08_GTOvVettesRd2.wmv)

For Rounds 3 to the semi-finals 29 MB Video of Round 3 to the semi finals (http://www.challengevideos.com/2008/GTOvVettes/08_GTOvVettes_Rd3_to_semis.wmv)

For Finals Videos and quick driver comments 15 MB Video of Finals and Winners (http://www.challengevideos.com/2008/GTOvVettes/08GTOvVettes_Finals.wmv)

Enjoy

Ken what microphone were you using? I have yet to figure what to look for in a mic in our sport

Edgar,

I have a Sony Handycam that uses mini dvd's (20 minutes per dvd). The camera has a built in microphone on the top. The problem with it is you get equal sound from 360 degrees.

I bought a separate directional microphone from Sony. It clips on the top and over-rides the camera's 360 mic.

I can set a switch on it so it just focuses in a 90 degree fan out to the front. You will still get some sound from the back if it's loud enough but you will pick up more to the front where you are aiming the camera.

To cut down on wind noise, the mic has a slip on "fury" cover. It worked great on Sunday. Hardly any wind noise on the videos.

Also, to steady the camera image, especially on the long telephoto shots, I use a monopod. It's a telescoping pole that screws into the bottom of the camera. It's like a tripod but with one leg. It's easier to carry around and store than a tripod.

I'll make a copy of the dvd for you. I'll give it to one of the CCDV racers who can give it to you at E-Town.

Hope this helps. Thanks for all the work you do for the Corvette Challenge.

So if I were looking to replicate the sound I want a directional microphone? My camera can take external mics but never knew what to shop for.

Yes..external directional mic would be best.

I'm planning to bring a flat screen TV and a DVD player to the CCDV meeting on Thursday. If you get there early, you'll be able to see (and hear) the video from Vettes vs GTO's at Atco. It's an hour long and it came out pretty good. I think you'll like it. I'm going to try to get to the V.E Club around 7:00 PM.

Who knows, maybe if some of the other members see it, we may get more people interested in the Corvette Challenge.

I'm also making copies of the DVD. But since it takes almost an hour per copy, I don't know if I'll have the 7 copies ready for everyone by Thursday evening. I'll do my best.

See you Thursday.

Edgar,

I will make you a copy of the DVD. I'll give it to one of the CCDV Racres to give to you. It's an hour long. There are several segmants of you and your Vette in it including you racing the '67 GTO. I haven't mastered editing or sending large video files yet.
