"why are most vettes automatic?"
Most car salesmen told me that is what the American consumer wants. Secondly, I was then urged to buy automatics as they are easier to re-sell.
I think they make more money selling automatics. Fixing them too.
So, I have 3 cars, all sticks. Taught my son to drive 'em. Getting ready to teach my daughter. :D
(Though I have to admit to borrowing automatics after breaking various bones, but that was just temporary. :()
:D

GREAT.. it's good to see that other people enjoy driving sticks as much as i do. The way I look at it is, Do you want to actually drive the car, or just steer it!! But Yes I also admit, I drove an automatic when i broke my ankle :(

I think the type of consumer has changed over the years. It's not just the true driving enthusiest anymore, the car has become more of a status symbol to many. Just like the people who buy a Hummer to tote the kids back and forth to soccer.

I bought an automatic for a VERY important reason; I need my license. But I won't make that mistake again, the automatic would be boring me to tears if it wasn't for the club.

Carl,
You got that right, wouldn't trade my automatic. Love the way mine shifts, since i lowered the car and added the wider tires mine does great in the twisties to. And those folks that have drove with me know i drive it like i stole it ;)

Mike some day you need to take me for a ride in that rocket ship you got. I have only been thinking about that ride for about two years now.

You just can't beat an automatic for drag racing. They are just so consistant..But I am kicking around the idea of using a Lenco in the 65 Coupe that I'm building :D

Please let me know if this answer is wrong, I believe the reason most vettes are automatic is due to warranties in the 70's. Most everyone was clucthing the trans right out of the car. To cut costs on warranty repairs, the automatic trans became the standard and manual the option. Please enlighten this young guru of c2's if this answer is wrong. sofar I have enjoyed the triva page and this is my first hour of being a member. Anyone have a64 driver at reasonable price for my 40th b-day in dec 04?

Welcome to the forum!
As for your question, the standard trans was a stick shift. But back then it was a three speed. 4 spds, and autos were optional.
4 speeds were the trans of choice, but alot of people ( men and women) just wanted to put it in gear and go. As for the powerglide trans., I believe most people were beating them up more than the 4 spd. The powerglide, rightfully known as the slip and slide  just couldn't hold up to the hard accelleration.
Hope this helps.

Told to you by a car salesman, huh? That would be the first clue that you were not getting a straight answer to your question. :D
