View Full Version : Slapshot - Track Tech Inspection
I'm looking to do a track event with the local Porsche club and need to get a tech inspection on my car for the event. I need an oil change so I figured this was a great way to meet the highly recommended team at Bryner since I've moved up here from FL. :)
The question is, do you have a problem teching the car for track events? Is this a service that you can perform and fill out the form?
Here is the form that needs to be completed for the event.

I know I need an oil change and the brake system flushed. Not sure where I am on brake pads, etc. Would like to schedule something the week of October 29th as the track event is the weekend of November 9th and the inspection needs to be completed within 2 weeks of the event.

I suggest you give Steve Spencer (Slapshot) a phone call at Bryner Chevrolet's service number: (215) 886-3140.

Another great place is Phoenix Performance, Palm, PA (http://www.phoenixperformance.net/autocenter.html) <== Click
I get my Corvette Tech inspections done there before every track day event.
They are a race shop and really know all about this stuff. Not that Steve doesn't, BUT these guys are a 100% race shop, specializing in Corvettes.
They will, if you want, align your car also and you will not believe how the car feels after the alignment. They will check everything, even things not on your Tech sheet to be sure you are safe while on the track.
This is just a suggestion from my own past experiences.
Please don't think I am saying not to take your car to Bryner, Steve at Bryner is top notch, that's for sure...... I was just giving an option. My car goes to Steve for all other work. Phoenix is my shop for race and track prep.
If you happen to call Phoenix, ask for Kurt.

I looked at your tech form and it looks like it has similar content to those we've seen for the Pocono track days. A dealership can signoff on the form as the form states, but they repreatedly talk about their "Reisentoter" standards and getting someone to stamp it stating that it was inspected according to those.
I think you would be better of at a racing type shop like Phoenix Performance. They only charged me around $30 to do it and I think it was a good race oriented inspection. They put the car on the lift, checked tightness of bolts and tweaked them where required, checked hoses and for obvious leaks, they measured brake pads, measure tire thread depth and gave me a pretty satisfying feeling that it was well looked over. I stood there and watched the whole process.
Granted, I can do a lot of those things myself too, but I can't sign off on it to meet the form's requirements and they can (and so can a car dealership if they meet "Reisentoter" standards) - whatever they are.
Thanks for the replies guys. I checked out the Phoenix web site but they are a fairly good drive for me. I live in Philadelphia and work in Berwyn. Bryner is still a bit of a drive as well. It looks like a couple of you guys race as well. Any suggestions on places for race equipment? I need a helmet as well. :) And does the club do track events as well? Other than quarter mile...
There's lots of places to buy helmets, but if you're going to do any car racing, the good advice that I got from Tony B a few years ago was to get a helmet that's SA2005 certified which will make it good for car applications for many years. Some of the newer track-day programs no longer allow motorcycle helmets (M rated). The special application (SA) helmets have additional fire protection from what I understand compared to a motorcycle helmet. It looks like the SCCA still allows motorcycle helmets for their autocross still but I don't think they allow them for Pocono track days. See http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo%20Rules/SoloHelmetBulletin.pdf
I got mine from a BP Speed Center in Horsham, PA. Its @ Rt 611 and Horsham Road next to the 7-11. The guy only stocks a few models but its enough to "try on" for size and he will order anything you want and get it in a day. If you don't like it or it doesn't fit, he'll ship it back and get you one that will. His prices were similar to those found on racing web sites.

JT, the Pocono people approved my M-2005 helmet in June, but you're right to suggest getting an SA-2005 helmet. With an SA-2005 helmet, not only are you safer, but you will not have the wrong helmet if a track requires the higher standard at a future event. The difference, as I understand it, is the SA has better fire resistant material inside the helmet.
Thanks for the suggestions. I plan on getting an SA2005 helmet. They currently allow the Snell 2000 standard but those will be phased out soon (probably next season) so I'm only looking at the Snell 2005 SA helmets.
This will be my first track event and I'm very excited. Well, if I get in that is. The event is fully booked so I'm on a wait list so we'll see if I even get in. If all goes well it promises to be good fun.

You'll have fun wth the Porsches. When JT and I go to Pocono track days, there are all types of cars. They group us together first in groups of drivers with the same skill levels, THEN take those and groupl them with similar powered cars.
We usually get a Porsche or two out with us and JT and I hunt them down.. In my approc 400 miles of on course time at Pocono I have only found one Porsche my car could not hang with. I could run the straights easily with him, but he was able to brake so much later, I ended up working my taoil off to catch back up every lap. The other Porsches we encountered, we had fun with, ran them down and went around....
You will have a ball. Just be safe. If it's your first time, just have fun and brake in a straight line.
This is my first event so I will be grouped with the beginners but I'm not sure if they separate based on vehicle power. If not then I believe I would likely have one of the faster cars starting out. I scheduled some work with Bryner, it's time for tires and an oil change and the Porsche group has a tech inspection this Saturday at one of the dealers to tech a number of the cars. I called the head of tech at the Porsche club and he drives a C5 Z06. :D We had a good chat and he said he'd help me through the tech process with my car since he knows exactly what to look for. Promises to be fun. Though I'm still waiting to see if I am able to get in the group yet. :(
