View Full Version : Sounds like a belt?

Spence, the other day I filled up with gas & when I started the car it squealed like a belt would if you were turning too sharply. Now, this happened once before when I pulled into a parking place about 2 months ago. It doesn't oscillate like when you're turning too tightly. Then it abruptly stops. The belt feels tight. Ever hear of this before?

I had an anoying sound that sounded like a belt squeel that was intermitent. It turned out to be the clutches on the air compressor which was replaced under warrenty.

Norm, that may be, but, the only constant was the AC was OFF. ;tt I wonder if maybe the pulley might be locking up at times.

Belts and pulleys don't go intermittent. I've seen the occasional intermittent sound turn out to be a slightly loose belt where the auto adjuster was not operating due to a weakend spring. After a few minutes the belt warms up and grips better.

But since the sound is so very intemittent (once in a few months), I would begin to troubleshoot by considering those devices that can produce such sounds... like a power steering pump (or even the alternator on that very rare case).

On a guess, my money is on the PS unit.

Check it's fluid level (probably ok but check anyway). On the next time the sound happens, load the steering box by turning the wheels while you are stopped. If you can oscillate the sound any, then you've nailed the PS pump.

If the steering test does nothing for the sound, turn on the AC. If you get cold air but the sound remains, you might be "looking" at simple alternator whine... at this point, I can only guess because unless we "hear" the sound up close and live... one man's squeak is another woman's... oh never mind.

The sort-of good news is that if it's an accessory, the sound will begin to happen more often.

Try the tests mentioned and let us know what you notice.

Then again, there's always dealer service... hey you know, they tell me Bryner is good for that :D:D:D

Mike the best advice is to come in and get it checked out. Belt noise sounds nothing like p/s pump or alt and if either of these seized you would now it . It's even poss it just got wet causing it to slip. If your around the area just stop in and I'll give a look.
