The plastic on my windshield washer reservoir and radiator shroud are starting to fade slightly. Does anyone know of any good stuff that works on plastic to bring back the luster?

to be concerned over my rep.
P.S.I know I should leave items like this to the professionals, but no one responded to poor Norm who was
stuck with an engine bay in need of some work.

YOu are correct in saying, "I should leave items like this to the professionals"

Norm, try Mothers brand "Back to Black" It's good stuff and will make them look like new.

Richy,

I just saw Norm's post. Tire shine is not the best for this purpose since it's designed more for rubber and leaves a greasy film that attracts dirt, not something you want underhood. The questions really is are the parts getting dull or discoloring.

Here's some links to products that might help

I think they appear to be discoloring which make them look dull. I've noticed the same thing on some other 03's. My windshield washer reservoir is discoloring more than anything else. I am not a chemist but am wondering if the 100% methanol I have in there stored in there has any bearings on it? I think I am going to try Glen's Black on Black idea.

On a little different note, Glenn and Mark, what is the product you
add to the gas tank when storing the car over the winter? It is supposed
to keep the gas from separating. (I think) Thanks! ts;aw

Norm,

Back to black may work well for the shroud but the fluid reservoir is another story. There is no way to keep if from discoloring a bit. Heat has that effect on the plastic.

Hard plastic surfaces should be treated like the paint, polish and buff, Flitz may help if very dull, softer plastic surfaces like trim are perfect for back to black or other plastic cleaners and protectants.

A very full tank with some dry gas will do or you can add Sta-Bil before filling the tank.

Glenn is usually right on in these areas but I do like the description on the Groit product. It sounds like a product fit for the job. If nothing else works there are always the after market color matching or carbon fiber covers.

Richy,
I was just gaining some confidence in your detailing expertiece. ;tt

I've used the Griot product on plastic ragtop windows that you could not see through at all and it brought them back.

Sta-bil gets my vote to Todd, I use it in everything I have that gets stored.

No need to say sorry to me for anything...I enjoy learning from this forum. I bought that Mothers Black to Black stuff tonight on the way home from Pep Boys and am going to try it. Alot of other guys came up with stuff that is mail order that I saved and will try later if this don't work. I even enjoyed getting poor old Richie's advice even though everyone has busted his "watcha you macall its" which is causing him to have an nondeserved inferiority complex!!!

HI Silver 06,

Use STABIL in the fuel - along with some Marvel Mystery Oil.
Follow the directions on the label.

I would not use drygas in the fuel tank..... it breaks down the surface tension of the water (that might be in the tank) and will allow it to pass through the membrane designed to prevent water from passing through it..... very easiliy damaging the fuel pump.;ae

Happy Holidays,
Ollie

Only you would know that water has surface tension. How does the H2O's surface tension affect the alcohol content of my favorite scotch????

Todd,

Ollie has personal reasons he uses Marvel Oil. We can't discuss that here on the forum.

One thing you can be sure of, if Ollie suggests it, there's a good reason to use it. I've seen it before but never knew what to use it for. You have to love any product called Marvel Mystery Oil though.

Probably. I'll be at Pep Boys later today. I'll pick you up a bottle if they have it. That way you have an excuse to stop by for a beer.

I used that mystery oil once but never again. Back in the early 80's I had a Chevy van that didn't use any oil. I put that stuff in my Chevy van before a trip to Florida and it cleaned out the engine deposts so well it turned into a quart per 500 mile front and rear main seal oil leaker.
