View Full Version : Putting the Vette to bed tonight for the winter

I am heading out for my last fling of fun with the Vette tonight. When I get home the vette is going to bed till April 07. Its time to stop driving and get working on a few mods. 2006 has been the best driving season I can remember.

Glenn,

You may want to move up your schedule. I see that we may get snow showers on Friday... December 1st. If that happens I'll be prepping mine for winter hibernation.

Yea, I am doing the same with mine as soon as the bad weather or crappy roads hit us. What will be real interesting is me keeping my hands off
the beast. The removal of the liability insurance will be the only thing that keeps me away.

OH boy! What a bunch of wussy's . You boys don't know what your missing. Taking my Vette on a cold clear crisp sunny day in the middle of Jan of Feb. For me it takes the edge off a long winter. Winter is depressing enough, but to add to it by putting my Z into hibernation, I would loose my mind.
So I guess that is why they make chocolate and vanilla.

Glennm27
11-27-06, 08:38 PM
I got your wussy Outlaw Whizard.

I don't care to drive my Corvette on sh!tty, cold roads when my tires don't feel like sticking to anything... I also have no interest in digging salt and gravel out of my engine bay all winter long plus I have 3 cars.

I have a feeling also that I am not as crazy about my Corvette as some of you are and some of you may think I am........

The real wussies are guys like you that refuse to drive the car hard......

Come on and show up with us sometime and we'll show you how to drive that thing.... But then again, if you do, remember you may get it dirty and depending on your skill, we may have to drag you and your car out of Swamp Creek up in Tinicim Township if you make just ONE wrong move...... Come on Nick, that's where we'll seperate the wussies from the drivers.... ;aw

I promise to help you out of the stream if you go in.. AND remember to bring your new Tom-Tom, becasue you WILL get lost.........

Do any of you that put your cars away for 3-4 months, add any stablizer to the gas tank? I plan on putting mine away until March 1. Also do you cover them for the winter (in the garage)?

Pretty funny! The plastic is only there because I was doing some spray painting in the garage, and didn't want to ruin the Car Jacket with over spray. There is the 72 next to the 71 which will be my driver as soon as I finish it(can't see it in the pic). There will be some rubber under the wheel wells on the 72 for sure! The motor is at Roland's machine shop in Doylestown being rebuilt as we speak, and I should have it back in about a week. WooHoo

I'm don't think I am being a wuss for putting my Vette to bed early. I drove it more than ever this summer, had it up on the Pocono track and am 200 miles short of hitting 40K miles.

With the cost of the car and the mods this adds up to just a little bit over $2.00 a mile plus gas and insurance...This is about the same as it costs to drive a tractor trailer per mile. If I do the logic in that manor I can consider the car to be paid off and every mile here after to be a free bonus mile. This enables me to justify to my wife the additional mods I am going to do this winter.

Ummm, you forgot one small detail... The tractor-trailer is producing income at a rate higher than $2/hr. But I won't tell your wife if you don't tell mine that I didn't actually win the raffle car. ;)

I have no interest in driving the car in the winter, so I save some Insurance money and tuck it away. Comprenesive coverage for the Corvette is $11/month, so I save a nice bit of money for 3 months.

Another nice thing about it, in March it's almost like getting a new car again.. :)

Denise,

Also a good idea to make sure your fuel tank is full (moisture in fuel can rust tank above the fuel line) and put a moisture absorber in the interior (I just bought some "Damprid" at lowes I am going to try this year).

http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/images/scbutton.gif SUPER AFR ZZ4 DESCRIPTIONhttp://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/images/scbutton.gif In addition to offering a full array of GM Performance Parts crate engines, GILBERT CHEVROLET has a *NEW* 350 c.i.d. to add to its line up, the Super AFR ZZ4. The Super AFR ZZ4 puts out a very impressive 464 hp @ 6,100 rpm and 440 ft. /lbs. @ 5,300 rpm. GILBERT CHEVROLET uses the street, strip, and race proven ZZ4 short-block as the foundation for the Super AFR ZZ4 for reliability, strength, and performance. For the camshaft, GILBERT CHEVROLET chose the GM 12370846 camshaft for the most torque and horsepower. This GM camshaft is a hydraulic roller with 0.509 inch intake / 0.528 inch exhaust lift and 222 degree intake / 230 degree exhaust duration at 0.050 tappet lift. To help the GM 12370846 hydraulic roller camshaft get beyond 6,000 RPM, GILBERT CHEVROLET added a 6155 Rev. Kit from AFR. The top end of the Super AFR ZZ4 consists of special AFR 195cc cylinder heads which GILBERT CHEVROLET chose to make the ZZ4 short-block breath and an Edelbrock Victor Jr. single plane intake manifold which was recommended by AFR to top off the engine. The AFR 195cc cylinder heads have 58cc combustion chambers and ZZ4 spark plug angles. This combination puts the compression ratio at 10.1:1 and still allows the Super AFR ZZ4 to run on pump gas.http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/ChevySmallBlockV8s/images/zz4afr.jpg The above picture shows the base long-block with some of the Premium engine parts installed.

Joel,

Don't neglect to upgrading everything aft of the engine. Doubling the HP on a high mileage car will reak havoc with the rest of your drivetrain.

C5pilot
11-28-06, 04:59 PM
Does that weigh any more than the stock engine?

Bob Weiss
11-28-06, 05:30 PM
Less weight with Aluminum heads and intake (and a good set of headers I hope).

Joel goes down the splippery slope. Now a good exhaust system. Better ignition system, fuel pump, carb, rev limiter, U Joints, better rear ratio, beef up the trans, torque converter, etc etc.

Have fun !!

Are you saying the lucky guy is going to fall into endless mod pit?

A stronger clutch, transmission and rear, wider rear tires, a scatter shield and maybe a parachute to stop him at the end of the quarter mile or hitting the ground when his wife throws him out of the window when she learns about the costs of these mods?

That will cost almost as much as some guys spend on Zaino.

Then Joel will hate all the trips to the mechanic and sell the car, buy a C6 and end of with a faster and more enjoyable car.

Sadly, from personal experience,I have to agree with Mark. The next Vette I buy will be a low option 6 speed that will stay completely stock. This will be
like my ' 99 FRC .I had dozens of runs over 3 years & never broke anything.

Now,as I've frequently said," a good day at the track is when I get to drive home".

I have to admit that Bob Weiss told me this would happen ,but I didn't listen.

I think you will be completely bored with a low option completely stock six speed after having that car. The only reason you are breaking stuff is because your engine got the power to do it.

A well known tuner told me that if I want to drag race my car I need to budget fifty dollars per run to repair broken stuff. I'll bet that is not far off to what your 500+rrwp car is costing you when it is all said, added up and done.

I definitely plan to detail the engine compartment while the engine is out! Still haven't decided on the ZZ4 (355HP) or perhaps the ZZ383 (425HP) if finances allow. I also plan to go with a 700 R4 to replace the original 3 speed trans (GM if not too expensive or perhaps a MadDog Gangster?) The 308 rear will go to 355 or 373. I think that's about it. The best part is: I'll hopefully be running at least mid-13's instead of high 15's.
