My 1992 will start and run fine. Then it starts to act up. A check ASR light will come on at the info center. The code 5y5 will come and go where my fuel info is in the dash. Also the security light will start to flash on the left corner of the dash. If I shut the car off at this point, the car will start and imediately shut off. The security light will flash. I tried locking and unlocking the passenger side door. Sometimes this works, but not always. This summer I had an interior light problem, the lights wouldn't go off. All we did was lock and unlock the passenger door and we could turn the lights on and off at will. Maybe these two are related, I don't know. I had the car to the dealer (A&T Chevy) and they told me it was the ECM that went bad. They couldn't find one, and after 3 days I brought the car home. Any help would be appreciated.

My 92 also had ECM problems, not like your problem but nevertheless it was bad. Diagnosing a bad ECM is easy. Determining what made it go bad is another thing all together. Like I said my 92 had a bad ECM Steve at Bryners determined that in minutes however he found that the previous owner installed a retrofit that Ecklers offers that will turn on my AC fan when the temp gets too hot. Although it worked fine cooling the engine it was sending voltage to the ECM and destroying it. What I'm getting at is this Steve at Bryners went the extra mile that few mechanics would. I have been running the car for 1 1/2 since the new ECM with no problem.

Thanks, I guess if I get a new one I should just go to the dealer for an official GM.

Sometimes the ECM breaks for no reason if thats the case it's simply a matter of bolting the new one in. And you have saved some $$. However if there is somsthing causing it to break and the new one goes belly up your right back where you started.
