I got an estimate to repaint my '79 for $3362.

It is a Dupont paint that comes with an 11 year warranty, 8 of which are 100% coverage for materials & labor.

The bumpers will be removed and painted separately and things like mirrors, emblems, etc will be removed too.

What do you all think about this price?

Sounds like a good price. I have seen it cost more then that.

Adam, that sounds like a good price but the important thing is to see other Corvettes they've painted. Forget about the warranty because you and they will not agree on what is acceptable wear after the first year, know what I mean?

I had my 76 painted,it took 6 months. When I got it back the clear coat had spots in it so it went back. That took another 6 months. The paint job is NOT what I was told it would look like SO, I am taking them to court. Adam, are they going to strip the old paint and use the new primer that is used today which will prevent spidering? I could fill a book with questions before I let anyone paint it again. You can call me and talk if you like . 215-357-1955 Don

Yikes. Sounds like a hell of an ordeal!
I'm not sure exactly what their process is, but he will not be stripping the whole thing down to the bare fiberglass. Only where it is needed to correct for cracks or pits and such.

Here are links to the estimate. Take a look, and let me know what you think...
Thanks!

Adam, that is a tremendous deal for a DuPont paint job. Since yours is laquer, I'm assuming that includes a complete strip-down first? If there is ever a problem with your DuPont paint, just let me know - Lissa's brother is the District sales rep from DuPont and settles EVERYTHING in PA. He is the one who is allowed to get all the autographed stuff when Jeff Gordon is at Pocono and Dover, and that is what you call absolute power in that business. My concern would be with the shop, not the product.

Adam:
Sounds pretty good. Make sure it includes the door jams & entire headlight bucket assemblies (not just the exterior headlight doors). Are you going to strip the present paint? I didn't see where that was included. And are you staying with the present red color?

I know the second one does not include the door jams. He said that increases the cost too much, partly because they'd have to redo the weatherstripping. He doesn't strip the paint down to the fiberglass. He just preps the surface to accept new paint, after sanding any areas that need special attention.

I'm not looking for a showroom/showcar finish. I just want it to look pretty as people see me driving down the road, waving.

Adam, I'm sure they will DA the entire car.
Make sure they use a good primer. Some shops use a Primer sealer. Ask about that. A good epoxy primer should be used.
remember one thing. The finished product is only as good as the prep work below it. Forget about the warranty. If the paint is not to your liking, even if they do agree with you. Just having the car tied up again is an inconvenience.
Use a QUALITY shop and ask questions. Stop in at anytime and see how their guys work, condition of the shop. Have they painted any Vettes before?
Ask for references, If they can't or won't give you any, RUN AWAY!!

Good Luck with your Vette ;)
