View Full Version : Water Spots / Clay Bar

I took my Vette out of service and have started a clay bar/ seven coats of Zaino project. I have recently bought a painted roof to compliment the clear one.

When I clay bar the top, I go over it with a wet cloth then dry it. As it is drying I can see small spots that look like water spots then they disappear when the car is totaly dry. Is there any way to get rid of them or am I just being too anal?

Norm

I'm glad you brought this up Norm. A couple of weeks ago we were out late with the Vette. A bird made an unauthorized deposit on my hood. When I got home I turned the water hose on the hood to remove it figuring i'd wash it later. A couple of days later when I washed it I noticed the same spots that you described. When wet its very noticable, when it dries it disappears. I waxed the hood twice same thing. What the hell????

hi Norm, you may have acid spots in the paint and not much will remove them 100%. A random orbit buffer and some finishing material "may" remove 80% and then some Z-5 then Z-2 will hide what's left. If you own a Corvette you are anal... good luck.

I'll bet that's what it is. The only place I have it is on the painted top that I just purchased. Do you think that 3m scratch remover would help hide it? I can not see it when it is totaly dry, but it bugs me. I am too rammy and me and random buffers are a combo I do not want to try on my Vette.

The clear coat has been permanatly damaged. Wet sanding is the way out of this. BUT.....................

You are best off leaving it as is......

Norm, 3M Scratch $ Swirl Remover will work, for acid etching a buffer is better, but you can do it by hand it will just take longer

Don, what you see is probably acid etching from the water sitting, 3M SSR or Zaino Z-PC will remove the etching, you need a product with mild abrasives to repair the problem. :)

Don
Looks like you are many times smarter than me. I started on mine on Monday and I can tell you that it is pretty toasty in my garage. The only bonus is that I can see myself loosing weight. My weight is dripping onto the floor one drip at a time.

OK you say it's NOT there when it's dry? So where's the problem?? My suggestion: BE CAREFUL no matter what you do! Last thing you want is to make the problem worse! Good luck!

Joel,I'm glad you had the guts to ask this question:I thought it was my advanced age.

If it is acid etching which is common in our area, you usually can only see it in certain light if the problem is not real bad.

You're right Joel it is not a big problem. However if all I need to do is use a good wax or polish to fix it i'd do it, if it takes more than that i'll live with it. I am aware of acid rain in our area but what surprises me is these spots where left behind from dried city water. I can understand rain water or even well water doing this but not city water??????????

Dear 92DUSTMOP ,
Just drive the car & enjoy it.Anytime you think the water stains are a problem, remember the water stains on your previous Vette.

Don:
Where'd you get a picture of my mom?? And you're not afraid of City water? ARE YOU NUTS???????? Might as well wash the Vette with sticks & stones! Everyone knows you have to rinse Vettes with Don Perrione - especially after a Zaino treatment!!

Slow days at work and this website is a bad combo. I'm either going to have to keep busier or sell my PC.
