ZF 6 speed

I was watching the Speed Channel the other day and they were working on a C4. When they got to the transmission the one guy said," As you know the ZF six speed is not a GM serviceable unit."
(or something to that effect)
Is this true? What happens when something breaks? Back to Germany?

There are several places that repair ZF transmissions like Rockland Gear in the US. Probably the dealer would send the trans out to a GM approved repair shop, they have done this many times in the past.

ZF Doc rebuilds them and also sells the parts to fix them. Haven't had the need to get inside mine yet but at least we aren't at the mercy of the dealers.
