Had a rich kid in high school had a '58 Impala with a 348 with 3 deuces and another guy that had a '62 Impala with a 409 ( and 3 on the tree). I always was under the impression that these were the first years for these motors.
"She's real fine, my 409!!"

Yeah, it started as a truck motor. Then in 58 they intorduced the 348 & in 61 the 409 for passenger cars.

Guess they were the precursor to the 396-427-454 big blocks.

Pete, I just looked at a pic of my friends car and your right, he had a white with a black interior 62 SS 4 speed with a 409. The car would spin the wheels in 3rd gear with the 456 rear!!!!

Can't get anything past Bill.
1965 was the year.
I won't be atrue POP POP for 6 more months.
Can't wait for a little one to spoil the hell out of.
The 50th Anniversary Corvette rocker should be here soon. Then the Corvette pedal car. This is going to be GREAT :D

I had a '58 Chevy back in the day. It had the 348 with trips & a 3 speed on the floor. The 2nd & last stick shift car I ever owned. The car ran like crap & I got rid of it after a few months. I think when the 409 appeared, the 283 was considered a small block.

O.K., when did the term "Rat Motor" become the term for the big blocks?
BTW, I have no idea either.
