In my last post I said I was looking at an 03 EB convertible. Well that deal fell through as the owner decided not to sell. I recently bought an 02 Quicksilver convertible 6spd. The previous owner changed the oil, detailed the car and decided to take car of the steering lock recall before he gave it to me. He had never had a problem before. I have a CLB sitting on the shelf. Should I wait and see or install it? Is there any downside to installing it such as throwing codes or causing other problems?

DO the bypass NOW! If you don't:

You'll be sorry & we'll all laugh when you get locked!

You've been warned & advised.

Now, GO INSTALL IT! RIGHT NOW!

I certainly don't want to be laughed at! More importantly though are there any issues with installing it either relating to warranty or causing any other problems.

No problems, the directions are straight foward, but as El said do it ASAP !!! the CLB on the shelf won't help you at all ...It's the only sure way to not be locked up... Bill

As my two friends said install the bypass, I have had two C5's flatbedded out of my driveway (customers cars) that had the GM fix, it can happen even after the fix on 6 speed cars, for the automatics the fix seems to work.

I have seen several on line directions for installing the CLB. They mention warmer temperatures than we are having now to avoid the risk of cracking the plastic panels when removing them. Anyone have any thoughts? Who has done their own car? Any help would be appreciated.

If you have a heated garage you will be fine, if you have to do it outside I would wait for warmer weather, it will just make the job easier

If you have a non heated garage you could start your car put the heat on, after the car is warm a hair dryer could warm up the plastic before installation.

Sounds like a driveway problem to me. :D

I'd be really upset if I broke the plastic. I think I will look for someone that has heated garage and hope in the mean time the car doesn't leave me stuck.

What years were involved on the recall?

Well I installed the CLB this past weekend. Everything worked as advertised, but I inadvertently broke one of the two retaining clips on the insided temp sensor when removing the connection. I reinstalled everything and just positioned the temp sensor in place when putting the knee pad back in place. The automatic climate control seems to be inaccurate. I need to set the temp around 80F to get it warm insided. If I damaged the sensor. which I don't think I did, it is only a $26.00 item. At any rate the steering wheel doesn't lock anymore. :D

I've broken the clips on that interior air temperature sensor nearly every time I take the dash apart. Its so flimsy. Many people might even have their's broke from obtaining vehicle service and don't even know it. I wouldn't think this would happen @ Bryner, but somewhere less Corvette experienced, definitiely yes.

I had bought a few spare from the parts department and kept them on my shelf while I was doign radio improvements on my car. Once you see what can break and how, you can work to avoid it, but the plastic is so thin and flimsy, its a shame.

They did redesign the interior air temperature sensor. The newest version is harder to put back into place, but looks stronger. I can post the part # later if you're looking to get one.

Hi Carl,

I could not help noticing your comment re: automatic Vettes.
Not to be disparaging regarding the cars that you currently own, but apparently it has been some time that you have ridden in an automatic C5.

I sincerely invite you to join me and the member racers of CCDV at our next event on April 2 at 9:00 AM at Englishtown and I will be glad to show you an automatic C5 that you would be proud to own.
Also, please feel free to bring any one of your vehicles that you feel would be a fine representative of your stable.

I ride in automatic Corvettes each and every week, I see many in my driveway, and if I bracket raced I would only do it with an automatic, but that's not for me, either is owning an automatic Corvette, all 11 of them so far have been stick shift cars. I just may have a 7 second Grand National in the garage that may make it to the track this year. ;)
