Hi guys, I am having a problem with my speedometer in our 67 vert. I was driving it a few weeks ago and noticed the needle was bouncing a little bit, a few miles down the road I heard a sound coming from the speedo and then it quit working.
What would you suggest the first thing I should check?

Thanks, Phil

Bouncing needle usually means a dry(needs Lube) Speedo cable. Could be something in the speedometer but I'd check for the broken cable first. Oh yeah, then get in touch with Don Lemek. :D

Hi Phil,

Sounds like a broken tang off the end of the cable. Because the cable has to bend coming off the tranny it gets a lot of abuse in that area.
Although I'm not a mid-year guy, it shouldn't be a big deal to fix, just a matter of stringing a new cable thru the sheathing. (after you remove the old cable and broken piece :) )

I will bet it is a bad cable. If it is not already trash (broken or unwound) pull out the entire cable and lube away. If it is broken then replace it. While you are checking it you can check the gear that goes in the trans as these are plastic and can break but I don't think it is that as that should not cause noise in the speedometer. The last resort is a bad speedometer but i would check this (after confirming the cable is good) with a variable speed drill connected to the the drive end of the speedometer cable down at the trans and listen carefully at the speedometer end while someone else operates the drill.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the help guys.
I just ordered a new cable from the Paddock.

What do you guys use to lube the cable?
I usually use white lithium grease.

Thanks, Phil
