View Full Version : Shutting off
I was wandering if someone could help me with a problem with my 89. I took her out for a drive the other day and when excelerating hard and the motor just shut off. No missing backfiring just quit.
I changed the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and got got the correct voltage off of the TPS. Still shuts off.
After the engine shuts off going down the road it will start back up after restarting it with the ignition.
The engine was just rebuilt with less that 2,500 miles on it.

This is only a guess but there is a resistor chip on the key to my 90. I'm not sure 89 has it but I bet they do. When you insert the key 2 copper strips contact both sides of the chip and read the resistance if they do not make contact the car won't start. I don't know for sure whether the resistor is still being read after the car is running. Maybe someone with more knowledge will answer this.
It sounds to me like you have an intermittent in the distributor/ignition module/coil system. Could be a loose connection or a bad coil that opens under load.
Just guessing...

Sonds like a good place to start.
Tonight I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge took it down the road and put it under load, it shut down, and the needle never went below 40 PSI.

Could be the anti theft system going bad.
Elm89,
How goes the trouble shooting?
On my 90 I had a similar problem and it was the fuel filter.
Take care...John
Took it to the shop yesterday and found #8 injector bad. Also the drivers for the injectors were not woking right in the computor. Disconnected #8 new computor and got it home. I have 8 injestors on order should bet here today
