Why did they ever create this pain in the butt shifting constraint? I was certainly glad I put in a CAGS override. It took more time to jack the car up than to install the part. It's cheap and it sure is nice.
I've been told that the reason for the 1st to 4th is to help gas mileage. I can't believe that going into fourth at such a low rpm would do anything but suck up the gas. Oh well at least I don't have to deal with it anymore. Perhaps there are more Vette owners who are annoyed with this feature? If so, just know there is a way around it.

Yep, that was one of the first things I did to our '96. GM had to put the Cags in to meet the guidelines mandated by the Federal Government. Don't know if it was to keep the Vette from being taxed as a luxury car or to get CAFE credits because of all the trucks GM sells. But it was a pain in the butt and I'm glad to be rid of it.

Circumventing this feature won't impact negatively when you go for inspection will it?

In a word "Nope!" ;rrr

The CAGS was to meet CAFE regs and avoid the gas guzzler tax. On the A4's I believe the 2.73 & 3.15 axles helped with that. (the reason they never offered the 3.42's with the A4)

The New Pontiac GTO with the LS1 has a 3.46 rear standard in both A4 and Manual 6 speed. The A4 car has a $1000 Gas Guzzler tax on the Window Sticker.

As for me, it has NEVER bothered me. The only time that thing is going to force you from 1 to 4 is if you shift around 1200-1300 rpms. That is way too soon to be shifting to 2nd.

Just my $.02 :D

Glenn,

The gas guzzler tax on the 04 A4 GTO is $1,000.00.

I wonder does the CTS-V have the CAGS too? That has an LS6 with a 3:73 rear. How come no "gas guzzler" tax on that? Is it because the GTO's come from down under? ;tt

I have a 94 coupe. what do I need to fix the CAGS? How hard is it to put in and how much will it cost me?

Thanks

One place you can get it is ecklers.com. The part number is 22712 and it costs $11.99.

As to the installation difficulty, it took longer to jack up the car than to install the part. The actual install time was 5 minutes.

Hope that helps.

It's located on the drivers side of the trans. Once you've disconnected the negative terminal of the battery, you can go under the car and disconnect the switch. You then place each piece of the CAGS overide into the appropiate switch recepticle. After that, all you do is tie up the wire side of the disconnect to the side of the trans with the wire tie enclosed with the CAGS package. I believe that about does it - just verify my memory by checking the directions enclosed with the CAGS part. Good luck.
Sorry I didn't answer you sonner but I was away in South Carolina.

Also the 1st to 4th light will still come on in your dash but you can now ignore it. A reprogramed chip can put an end to the light if it bothers you. I've had mine disconnected for several years now and I don't even notice the light anymore. :)
