View Full Version : Gasoline Brands
I have read many posts since getting my C5 that refer to different brands of gas and how they relate to some of the common problems with failing gas gages and sending units. Does anyone have any factual evidence of this being the case? I would be interested in opinions as to what brand you use and why. I have not heard of any of these problems in other GM models due to brand of fuel used.
Rob,
I heard Steve at Bryner said to stay away from Sunoco gas because it caused fuel sender problems, of course my last 4 C5' ran nothing but Sunoco and I never had a sender issue, many of my friends and customers stayed away from Sunoco and had problems, so it's not the fuel. Any brand name fuel will be good quality

I have come to the same conclusion as Carl. And this problem does effect many GM vehicles.

I have used Sunoco 94 for the entire time that I have owned my C-5 with no problems, I did hear that a low sulfer gas is best but i don't remember the brands....
Everyones comments are right in line with what I think. I think it is just bad luck if the gage or sender goes bad in a particular car. I think any brand name of premium fuel is fine otherwise other cars from different manufacturers would be having similar problems. I think it is an issue with the gage and or sending unit GM is using, however I have read posts that have never experienced any problems and have many miles of daily use on their cars.
Had bad sending units (2) in my 2001 Lseries Saturn. I use all brands of fuel in it. I'm not trusting it anymore, I reset the odometer whenever I fill up just as a second check.
No problem with the C4 though.

According to Steve Spencer, the higher sulphur content gas seems to affect the older sending units. However, if you car gets used to using Sunoco, Citco or Hess then it'll work fine. I used nothing but Mobil & Exxon for 4 years. Added one tank of Sunoco 94 and "zowiie" the gage crapped out! ;yn You would think that by now it'd be fixed.
It could have been critters ;bc ;bc ;yn

I have had my gas gauge act up ONLY if I try and over fill it. I now stop pumping when the handle shuts off the gas. Since doing this I've had no problems...

STEVE SPENCER ALSO TOLD ME TO STAY AWAY FROM SUNOCO. HE SAID THAT SHELL IS THE BEST GAS TO USE FOR THE VETTE. I HAD QUESTIONED HIM AFTER NOTICING MY CAR WAS RUNNING ROUGH. I DID SWITCH TO SHELL AND HAVE NOTICED A DIFFERENCE SINCE THAN. :p

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that Steve replaced my sending unit twice. The second one failed within days and probably less than a tankful. Sunoco fuel never touched it and it still failed immediately.
I used nothing but Sunoco 94 in 4 out of 5 C5's I owned, I never had a fuel gauge or fuel sending problem, SS must be smoking something. ;)
